The owners of this property in the heart of Cabbagetown approached Lanescape looking to create housing flexibility, considering the laneway suite to house long-term tenants or to function as their personal pied-a-terre. Our team began by devising several schemes conducive to a variety of living scenarios while considering the physical impacts and financial opportunities of each. These options evolved into a 1,470 square foot, 2-storey design offering a luxurious 1-bedroom suite at the upper level, with a self contained guest suite and garage below. The flexible floor plan prioritizes a large comfortable living space over a compact multi-bedroom unit and allows the lower level suite to function as an extension of the space above, main house, or as an intermittent accommodation for the homeowner.
Located in the Cabbagetown Heritage Conservation District, the design is a modern response to the neighbourhood’s vibrant history while satisfying the changing lanes by-laws. By echoing the design language of the neighbourhood and avoiding direct replication of its characteristic architectural features, the design embraces modern style while paying homage to the laneway’s past.
This Cabbagetown Laneway Suite exemplifies our uniquely tailored approach to planning where financial, physical, programmatic, regulatory, and cultural considerations are all integral to the design process and final response.
