This transitional-style laneway suite in Cabbagetown is situated on a unique property on which stands one of the original heritage cottages in the neighbourhood. Lanescape was engaged by the homeowners to develop a two-storey laneway suite that would provide a modernized garage and live-work space for their personal use, alongside a long-term rental suite on the second floor.
Working closely with the homeowner, our team developed a site plan scheme that would limit impact on the lot’s existing open space while providing a private outdoor area for the laneway suite tenant. The proposed structure offers a large garage accessed from the yard adjacent to a home office and bathroom. A separate tenant entry provides access to a 2-bedroom suite at the second floor. The design relies on simplified envelope and traditional claddings to compliment both the existing heritage residence and the neighbourhood at large.
The Broadcast Laneway Suite illustrates how a comprehensive knowledge of the changing lanes by-laws can be applied to a unique lot to create a design response that is functional, responsible and beautiful.
