This 495 square foot, two-storey Laneway Suite, is one of our smallest builds to date. Fitted into an extremely tight lot – carved, but not constrained by the by-laws – this one-bedroom suite demonstrates how an urban home can function in a compact footprint. Working within the tight constraints of the property, this small, yet functional Laneway Suite features an open living space on the ground floor and bedroom suite on the upper level. The proposed mass maximizes the permitted zoning envelope. The Lanescape team derived clever design solutions using overhangs, glazing arrangements, and claddings to articulate each elevation. The rear yard dormer is strategically located to maximize daylight and privacy, while providing usable space at the interior. A side yard walkway connects the rear yard to the lane to permit garbage pick-up and quick access to the commercial corridor behind. The Monarch Park Laneway Suite exemplifies how good design can yield quality, comfortable space even on some of Toronto’s smallest lots.
